G.W. Andrews opened the almost forgotten Andrews Theater in 1918, which was managed by A.J. Sykes. It had a five year run as an African-American theatre and in 1923 Claude Nickberry took the theatre over, renamed it the Capitol Theater and it closed the following year.

The Andrews Theatre was an African American movie theatre on Mulberry Street in the city’s African American business district that was decimated by racial violence and arson in 1930.
