In 1905 Beatrice Fairchild opened the first movie theater to be built in Sherman which was located on the north side of the town square. The Empire Theatre was then purchased by Jim B Wilson in 1907 who changed its name to the Jewel Theatre in 1909.
Wilson died in 1918, the theater was taken over by H. O. Jones and the name was changed to the Washington Theatre. The Washington Theatre was in for one more name change to the Plaza Theatre on October 28, 1936, when it was purchased by the Robb & Rowley-United Inc. theater chain. After six years as the Plaza Theatre it closed for good in 1946 and was demolished in 1970.
