Strand Cinema

The Strand Cinema was located in the village of Llantwit Major, close to the RAF St. Athan Air Station.

It opened 25th April 1940, and was a modern building constructed both as a cinema and as a dance hall. Operated by Bridgend Cinemas Ltd., in the early 1960’s it was managed by Peter Tudge.

The Strand Cinema closed on 8th November 1969 and was demolished in 1970.

I can recall that this cinema had a box that was designed with four projection ports. The two centre ports were used for the projection system whilst the two outer ports were intended to be used by spot lights on dance nights. In the early 1960s only the left outer port had a spotlight . The right outer port being useful as an observation point when using the extensive Strand dimmer system.

Many years ago I attended a showing as my Aunt lived in Llantwit Major, don’t remember much of it as I was only a youngster then, but at least I was an attendee (even if it was only once! ) Attempted to attend when in later years I was stationed at RAF St Athan,East, but never got there, did look in at the Astra on West Camp and took 2 photos of the box(as by then I was a projectionist)(pair of Kalee 11s) Memories…
