The North 5th Street Drive-In opened its gates on July 7, 1950 with “Blue Grass Of Kentucky” along with two unnamed cartoons.
The June 10, 1950 issue of BoxOffice included the “Fifth Street Moviette, Duncan, 250 cars, owned by Jack Guest”, in its list of drive-ins scheduled to open later that month.
The correct address is:
505 W Elder Ave, Duncan, OK 73533
North 5th Street Drive In was in the Duncan telephone book in 1951 and drop in 1956. Duncan Iron and Metal is in the background.
I believe that the indicated location of the 5th Street Drive-In is wrong. Here is the aerial photo of the drive in. http://tinyurl.com/ldknwh2 Note that the roads are parallel. If you go further south to 5th & Elder, you’ll see where it matches up. http://tinyurl.com/m63dvj2
A Bank now sits on the property, but you can still see the outline of the drive in and the ridges.
Guys,I have it parking 400 cars in 1956,No estimate on roof seats. It was owned by Jack Guest.Noticed there were two other Drive-ins in Duncan in the late Fifties.
Fixed the Google Earth picture. The one before was looking out at a field. The new one is the junkyard that raybradley mentioned.
This link states this 5th Street property is now used as a junk yard. A sad ending for such a nice drive-in!
