Skyline Drive-In

The Skyline Drive-In was opened June 21, 1950 with a capacity of 600 cars. Located on Natural Bridge Road across from Lambert Field Airport.

The theatre was built and operated by Ray Parker who leased it to Herbert Hartstein in 1958. It was Labor Day 1958 when the theatre’s screen was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. The audience saw firemen at work instead of a movie that evening. It was thought the venue might not reopen as it was known Lambert Field would be expanding onto the site, but it did reopen in October and operated until its closure on January 31, 1960. The land was then used for an expansion of the airport.

The drive-in was to the south of Lambert International Airport. I don’t think the drive-in property was bought by the airport. Interstate 70 is between Natural Bridge Road and the airport.

It certainly appears from comparing the photos from 1958 and 1971 that the airport did expand considerably. Currently, the American Airlines St. Louis Ground Operations Center sits on the property.

That Google map is not helping a bit. Where the Metrolink stop is was, some 50-60 years ago, where Natural Bridge Road ran.

The Skyline’s last ad in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was on Jan. 31, 1960. The final program was (The) Naked Venus, Guns Don’t Argue, and Walk Into Hell.

Based on the aerial photos, the Skyline was about where the American’s St. Louis Ground Operations Center building is today. Its sign says its address is 10900 Lambert International Boulevard, and sure enough, Google Maps likes 10900 Lambert International Blvd, Bridgeton, MO 63044.
