Built in 1873 as a Christian Mission (Salvation Army) hall, the Tamworth Hall opened as a cinema in early-1910, with seating for 175. It underwent renovations in March 1912 and was re-named Star Cinema, with seating increased to 250. It was closed in 1917, due to conditions during World War I.
Later used for storing cars, the area was cleared for redevelopment which included the demolition of the nearby Dome/Olympia Cinema. However the Star Cinema building was spared, and in 2009, it is a martial arts centre and gymnasium.
