Google maps it right when “Hickman Mills” is searched. This may had been in the town of Hickman Mills.
Address for this drive-in was 11400 Hickman Mills Drive.
Look for the 1957 Robert Altman movie The Delinquents on the MGM Movie Channel – it was made on location around Kansas City, and one scene was shot at the Crest Drive-in.
Mike Rogers, there was a Majestic Theater in Kansas City. It was downtown. I saw a picture of it on facebook today but cannot find it now.
This opened on July 1st, 1948. Grand opening ad in the photo section.
A note in the April 1, 1950 issue of Boxoffice said that the Crest was Commonwealth’s first drive-in when it opened in 1948. At the time of the article, the circuit had grown to four active drive-ins with 11 more expected to open that year.
Preliminary announcement for Screen 2 appeared Wednesday, March 14, 1973 (“Oops! We’ve juzt had twins!”) [Kansas City Star, pp. 22]. Identical ad appeared opening day Friday the 16th, Screen 1 showing Peter Sellers in WHERE DOES IT HURT?, LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS, and David Niven in the barely-remembered THE STATUE, while Screen 2 inaugurated with WHAT’S UP, DOC?, PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM, and the Marlo Thomas/Alan Alda 1970 melodrama JENNY [KCS, pp. 28].
Closed on August 31, 1983 with “Hercules” and “Cujo” in Screen 1 and “Tootsie” and “Cujo” in Screen 2.
Very minor correction to 50sSNIPES information–Screen 2 did indeed have TOOTSIE showing: however according to Kansas City Times 8/31/1983 listing, its co-feature was actually multiple Razzie Award nominee YOR: THE HUNTER FROM THE FUTURE starring Reb Brown (pp. 14-B).
Correction: now Memorial Missionary Baptist church @ 11424 Hickman Mills Dr. Some ramps next to the parking lot are barely visible.
Please update.
