Opened in 1916 as the Colne Valley Cinema. By 1927 it was operated by the Tozer & Linsell Circuit. The name was later changed to the Picture House around 1945, but this was short lived as it was re-named Savoy Cinema by 1954.
The Savoy Cinema closed in 1970 and it was partly used as a Chinese restaurant in the foyer area, while the auditorium stood empty and derelict. In 2009, the building was converted into a cafe and children’s play centre, but this had closed by January 2012.

I’m all for progress, but look! They’ve completely removed the “SAVOY†name. That I find quite sad. Maybe someone could have at least kept the name up there??? Btw: The new exterior looks bloody awful…

Visited Halstead on the 26th January, 2012. Pleased to say that the Empire is showing films again, but that the Picture House/Savoy is closed up and for sale, the childrens play area now closed. It is still in the same horrendous colour scheme though.
