Designed by Will Alsop and costing GBP 52 million, The Public fully opened in August 2009, although parts of the arts centre were open in June 2008, including the theatre which also doubles as a cinema.
The building is unashamedly funky, with irregular windows, random interior levels and masses of coloured neon lighting.
The theatre is at one end of the rectangular building and has 249 seats on a retractable rake. Projection is digital, and occasional days of film are presented. Often an old classic will be screened during the day with a more up-to-date offering in the evening. It was closed in 2013.
