Located on High Street. The Grand Cinema was built in 1908, and was constructed at the rear of an existing building, with the entrance through a former shop front. It was enlarged in the 1920’s.
The Grand Cinema continued until at least 1944, but by 1947, it was listed as the Grand Theatre and was operated by Woodward Cinemas. Its last operators were the Portavon Cinema Co. Ltd., who were listed in 1954. Apparently, it never fitted Cinemascope, and was closed on 20th April 1963 with Tyrone Power in “Witness for the Prosecution”.
It was converted into a bingo club in 1963. This closed in 1972, and the building was demolished in a redevelopment of the area.

1938 saw the cinema with 1100 seats at 6d to 1/3d and fitted with a R.C.A. sound system with 2 changes of programme per week at prices of 6d to 1/3d.
This cinema was on High Street, High Street had no junction with Forge Road.
Last film was screened 20th April 1963 ‘Witness for the Prosecution’ with the cinema going over to bingo following that.
Films throughout 1960s were advertised in Cinemascope so previous comment on that may be incorrect.
Sean, you’re quite correct. My grandfather (Bill Woodward) was the manager at the time and I went there to see a film with my parents in 1963 (Lancelot and Guinevere). After that he had to find another job. He ended up in the Treasurer’s department at the council offices.
