A Mid-Century Modernist theater located at the corner of Okeechobee Road and Palm
Beach Lakes Boulevard. The 1,100-seat Plaza ‘Rocking Chair’ Theatre was opened by Florida State Theaters Inc. on December 22, 1967 with Barbara Parkins in “Valley of the Dolls”. It was equipped to screen 70mm & Cinerama films. I first went there to see "Live And Let Die". It was later twinned, and showed midnight movies Fridays and Saturdays during the 1970’s.

It closed in January 1984 screening Shirley MacLaine in “Terms of Endearment” & Max Gail in “D.C. Cab”. I believe, and is now the site of Braman Motorcars.

Closing date was January 1984, ending with “Terms of Endearment.” The Plaza opened in 1967 with a single-screen auditorium containing 1100 rocking-chair seats and a 55-foot screen. The cavernous lobby may have been as large as the auditorium. AMC’s Cross County 8’s close proximity may have hastened the Plaza’s demise. Postmortem details can presently be found at:

The Plaza was among the last new builds by ABC Florida State, closing as a Plitt Theatre.

Florida State Theatre Circuit launched the 1,150 “jet lounger” seat Plaza Rocking Chair Theatre architected by Robert C. Broward in December 1967 with 70mm and Cinerama film projection capability. The $500,000 theater with its 22' by 55' screen wowed patrons.“ Over 100,000 folks saw “Star Wars” here in 1977. Plitt Theatres, which took on the venue in 1978, closed here as the Plaza Theatre January 19, 1984 with “Terms of Endearment” and “D.C. Cab.”
