MichaelKilgore has a reason why Floriland DI closed
Boxoffice, April 4, 1960: “Jim Poindexter was force to close his Floriland Drive-In, Tampa, because of extensive damage to his screen tower during a subtropical rainstorm”
This opened on March 11th, 1952. Grand opening ad in the photo section.
The demise of the theater was accelerated due to the wood screen frame burning due to lightning and combustion of pine trees next to the screen. The indoor twin cinema next door which premiered such films as Tommy in quadraphonic sound also nailed the coffin.
Another great handbill – thanks!
Thanks Nick, again.I know you wish you would have taken pictures years ago.I am in the same boat,If they don’t turn up in BOXOFFICE you won’t see them.
Thanks Nick.
In contrast with the above aerials here’s an aerial of the former lot as it looks today:

Now who could that be? Maybe me in my Super 8 epic horror film “THE FUNKY VAMPIRE”. I played the Vampire and of course got all the girls before a wooden cross was thrown on me. VIOLENT death,We almost got an R rating.
And what about the Unfamous Monsters?
Great article on Forry,Surprized more CT guys haven’t written about FAMOUS MONSTERS.
I sent that way before we ever heard of CT, You know you could put a bunch of pictures on if you have the time.Maybe in a few months i can send a few because Robin didn’t put all the ones i sent,Maybe it was too many.Well, you know me and these Theatres.
Yes Mike I still have that photo and I intend to post it on the 20th Century page as soon as I can. It’s a great photo too. Thanks for sending me a copy!
Do you still have the booth picture I copied for you out of BOXOFFICE.Think it was the 20th Century.
