Dixie Theatre

The New Dixie Theatre, owned by E. N. Hirsch, opened on February 19, 1912, and was located on 26th Avenue in Gulfport. An advertisement for the Dixie Theatre in early-1920 boasts that it was electrically cooled in large, bold letters.

It closed in 1920 after his new theatre which was built next door to the New Dixie Theatre was opened with great fanfare.

That new theatre that was opened was the elegant Strand Theatre, later to become the Paramount in the 1930’s.

The correct location for Hirsch’s Dixie Theatre was 1407 26th Avenue in downtown Gulfport. This location was north of his new Strand Theatre on the west side of 26th Avenue, the fourth store front from the corner of 14th Street when walking north on 26th…The Strand was located in the south block of stores on east side of 26th between 14th St and 13th Streets.

The description says that the Strand/Paramount was built next door to the Dixie, but we have the Paramount listed at 1312 26th, which would be a block away and on the opposite side of the street from 1407 26th.
