The Theatre Deauville was opened on July 11, 1975 with Robert Redford in “The Great Waldo Pepper” & Juliet Mills in “Beyond the Door”. From 1977 it showed porn movies on one screen and mainstream films on the other. It was closed on July 30, 1990 with Sean Connery in “The Hunt for Red October” in screen 1, and unrated XXX movies “The Love Shack” & “The Wrong Woman” in screen 2.
Now a family dollar store.

How could such a concept theatre work. X rated porn on one side and maybe a G or PG on the other screen. Surely, they were separated with no chance of a child slipping in a X rated movie,And what about the restrooms.
I have seen twin theatres play a X rated feature like Warhol’s “DRACULA”,but no a constant flow of adult movies.Quite, frankly i am surprized it ever went over in Houston.and i wouldn’t want to manage such a set up.
It’s true! I saw SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER & LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR(both rated R)here with my folks in early 1978. I was 8 and LFMG scared the hell out of me. I think it was still this way when we moved to Las Vegas in March of 1979.
Yes, this theater really did exist with this format. Houston did not have zoning in those days which led to some interesting neighbors. You’ll note on the map that this theater was virtually next door to a middle school and high school. Many a student tried the trick of buying a PG ticket and trying to sneak in the X rated side. I believe this theater shut down in the late 80’s but not quite sure on that.
Opened July 11, 1975 in the Deauville Square mini-mall with “The Great Waldo Pepper” and “Beyond the Door.” One screen of adult X-rated content was added late in 1977. Was still open in 1988.
Grand opening ad posted.
Final showtimes were at the end of leasing contract at the 15-year mark on July 30, 1990 with “The Hunt for Red October” on Screen 2 and the double-feature of unrated “XXX” features in “The Love Shack” and “The Wrong Woman.” Also known as Theatre Deauville and originally operated by Nineteen Sixty, Inc. which operated four automated cinemas in suburban Houston in the 1970s before moving on from each.
