The Empire Cinema was operated by Midland Empire Theatres. It apparently had a stage on which variety was occasionally presented. It was located within the Co-operative store at the junction of Nottingham Road, Grosvenor Road and Church Street. Built on the site of the Electra Theatre which opened in 1909. It was replaced in 1911 by the Empire Cinema.
It was demolished in 1959 and a Co-Op store and offices were built on the site. Latterly part of it has been in use as the Monkey Run Club, but this has now closed and is up for sale.

Built around 1909 on the site of the ‘Electra’ theatre. Mr Norman Gray was one of the first resident managers and had a flair for organising concerts for first World War Forces. The Electra was built in 1909, and replaced in 1911 with the bigger Empire Palace seating between 600 and 700 people. It was demolished in 1959 to make way for a new Co-Op store and administrative offices.
