Hippodrome Cinema

The Oxford Hippodrome Theatre opened around 1913 with 300-seats. Externally it is a fairly plain brick building and has a plaque in the centre, with the name ‘The Oxford Hippodrome’ in stone. It had a mixed programme of films on the screen and variety acts on the stage. In 1921 a larger auditorium was built onto the original one with seating for 900. In later years it was operated by the Nottingham based Eskay circuit. It became an EMI Bingo & Social Club which closed in 1983. It closed as the Hippodrome Cinema in December 1991. The building became Tonkers Night Club from the early-1990’s. It had closed by February 2010. The foyer is in use as a bar/cafe.

Tonkers seems to have closed and only part of the foyer is in use as a bar / cafe. The future of the building must be in some doubt.

Operated as an EMI Bingo & Social Club for a time as well, before being a nightclub, as EMI Bingo ceased trading in September 1983, the clubs having been sold to Coral.
