Located in the north-eastern Victoria town of Chiltern. The Star Theatre was built in 1866, and is a hall attached to the Star Hotel at the corner of Main Street and Conness Street. The grounds of the Star Hotel house the largest Grape vine in the world, verified by the Guinness World of Records.
The Star Theatre became the town’s cinema from 1902 until 1964. A projection box was built outside at the stage end of the building, and the stage became a raised seating level. Today, the projection port-holes are still to be seen on the rear wall of the building, but the projection booth has been demolished. After closing, it became an antique store.
Since 1996, it has been restored for films and live shows, re-opening on 18th May 1996 with Judy Garland in “In the Good Old Summertime”. It is equipped for 16mm presentations and is available for special screenings.
The Star Theatre was National Trust Listed in November 1972.
