Carmike Theatres was bought by AMC in 2016 with the official switchover to the AMC nameplate on March 24, 2017. It became the AMC Classic Ohio Valley Mall 11. The Classic designation was given to the bulk of acquired locations, including Carmike and Kerasotes venues, that generally would receive more modest updates and were likely not going to be renewed past the leasing expiry. The AMC COVM closed on March 16, 2020 for the COVID-19 pandemic. It reopened September 3, 2020. It then closed at the end of a 25-year leasing period on September 8, 2024. The mall owners were in search of a new operator.
Edited from my October 8, 2022 comment:
The Ohio Valley Mall Cinema opened theater-less on October 4, 1978, and was built next to the former Shia’s Hilltop/St. Clairsville/70-40 Drive-In.
Less than a year later, a new theater was built inside the mall and the Ohio Valley Mall Cinema held its grand opening on July 13, 1979 as 4-screen theater. The theater opened with 007’s “Moonraker” at Screen 1, “The Main Event” at Screen 2, Disney’s “101 Dalmatians” at Screen 3, and “Bloodline” at Screen 4.
In October 1985, one of the four screens closed for extensive remodeling, which at the time, five more screens were added and it became a 9-screen theater in December 1985. Two more screens were added in the 2000s bringing a total to 11 screens.
The Ohio Valley Mall Cinema throughout its history was first operated by Cinemette Corporation of America, then by Cinema World in January 1987, then Carmike after it took over Cinema World in April 1994, and finally AMC.
that was generally how mall Cinemas used to be signed. This sign looks like the old Serif font signage that GCC used in the 70’s and 80’s mainly so the mall could change the operator without a need to change out the signage.
Yeah, I think that’s the unofficial name.
The theater is almost directly across the mall from the location you mentioned. You see the large store at the top of the mall? The theater is directly south of the two bushes/trees on the left side of that top anchor.
I see the sign says MALL CINEMAS is that another name for the theater?
The red dot is off a bit in the Google Satellite Photo, the theater is to the northwest in the Ohio Valley Mall Shopping Center, sorta to the northeast part of the building, with the lighter roof, right?
Thanks for the marquee photo MajorMajor.
March 2010.
