Empire Cinema

Originally built as a vicarage. The building then became a laundry, before being converted into the Empire Cinema in 1936. It was independently operated by the same proprietor as the town’s other cinema, the Palace Cinema on Beaconsfield Street.

The Empire Cinema was still operating in 1966, but later that year it became the New Empire Bingo Club. In recent years it has been a Whitehead’s supermarket, and in 2010 operates as Nisa Extra supermarket.
