Mann was a major player in SoCal during the 1980’s. Unfortunately most of the what they built was outdated are a few years and overtaken by larger more attactive stadium style theatres. AMC built alot of plexes also during that time that have now closed or been replaced.

Mann was a major player in SoCal And a lot of other places. However, he claimed his “major play” in MOST of Caifornia off of his aquisition of National General Theatres, which was at the time the major player. After selling/closing most of the original chain of NGC Theatres, he sold or closed most of the theatres he built. You can count on one hand MANN THEATRES still under that banner.

The Mann Old Towne was one of the chain’s biggest grossers during the early 80’s.

Yes it is demolished. You can punch in the address in Bing Maps and look at the birds eye view. North amd south you will see the theater.. View it east and west you see it demolished.

Plus I go by that way a lot.

“After selling/closing most of the original chain of NGC Theatres, he sold or closed most of the theatres he built.”

While Ted Mann did close/sell most of the old National General sites, in favor of multiplexes, he wasn’t involved with the company’s slide in to irrelevance. When Mann stepped down as company chairman in 1991, the company was still a regional powerhouse, with 510 screens. The real decline began around 1997, when Mann Theatres was purchased by Westar and continued after WF Cinema Holdings took over in 2000. They failed to make the transition from aging multiplexes to viable megaplexes.

The Gelndora 6 exemplifies what happened throughout the Mann chain. Success in the multiplex era, but a failure to keep up with industry changes in later years.

The site is a Fresh & Easy and has been for sometime (at least one year), but the Fresh & Easy store has yet to open as of September 2011.

I Fully Disagree with the above comments. The Theaters Multiplex was very updated. Comfy Seats,Excellent Sound System,Air Filters and I like to go in and pick my own seat once I get into the Theater. I hate assigned seating and I dont like stadium seating. It is a Theater not a Concert Hall. I find it beyond sad that such a great chain closed its doors. Also, just a note it hired the disabled as well as people of all ages which the other chains don’t do!!!!!

I moved into the neighborhood just a few months after the theater opened. I’m a film critic and saw ANGEL HEART here in early ‘87, which I reviewed for the paper at Mt Sac. Later saw LETHAL WEAPON, GRAND CANYON, and JFK here, among others.
