The Merrimon Twin opened on December 21, 1973 with Walt Disney’s “Robin Hood” on both screens, which were listed as both “North” and “South” theaters.

Also, per first comment by Arx on November 30, 2012, we’re missing the aka Two Moons Brew and View. The last line of the description also needs to be changed. Beerinator says that Two Moons opened in 1998 and changed its name to Asheville Pizza & Brewing Co. in 1999. Pubcrawler still has this page, placing Two Moons at the theater’s address, and the earliest customer review dates from October, 1998. This theater has been a movie and beer joint for about fifteen years.

Chuck and Mike. This article is about the former “Merrimon Twin” which existed at this same location years ago. That theater closed down. A different theater/business opened later under the name “Two Moons Brew and View” in 1998. The current Asheville Pizza & Brewing Co is the third theater to open there. If you want to start a separate entry for AP&B, feel free. This entry is for the former Merrimon Twin.

Information above needs to be corrected. It is not a twin it is a single screen theater and it has been open ever since I moved here which was 2004.It was a twin when it was the Merrimon Twin

THE EXORCIST played at this theatre in March of 1974. It was at the time the highest grossing flick for that theatre until JAWS surpassed it on June 20,1975 making it not only the highest grossing film for that theatre, but it broke all boxoffice attendance records in Asheville bringing in record crowds during its run.

Not to mention the original STAR WARS played here as well at the Merrimon…breaking all boxoffice attendance records and became the highest grossing film for that theatre……..

I remember watching Rocky III here. The line to get in went down the side of the building all the way past the back of the theater.

Hard to believe it played in two twin theatres unless they were tiny theatres, but in those days Twin theatres were pretty decent size.

I think it must have been Disney’s animated version of Robin Hood that opened the Merrimon Twins. 1973 was the year it was released.

Was that the animated Disney feature ROBIN HOOD that was the opening attraction at the Merrimon in 1973? Showing in two auditoriums?

On January 21, 1974, Boxoffice reported that the Irvin-Fuller circuit’s Merrimon Twins had opeend on December 21, 1973, with “Robin Hood” the initial feature in both auditoriums.

Owners Sam Irvin and Jack Fuller had been operating theaters for over 20 years, and the opening of the Merrimon Twins brought the total number of screens in the Irvin-Fuller circuit to 14, with locations in Asheville, Columbia, and Spartanburg.
