The Cinema Theatre is the name given for this house in the article That appeared in the July, 1963, issue of International Projectionist. Stewart & Everett’s new 600-seat house was designed in a spare, Modern style by architects Charles H. Wheatley & Associates.
this page of the magazine has four photos showing the theater’s front and public interior. Not surprisingly, subsequent pages feature a couple of photos of the projection room and a description of its equipment.
This was called the Cinema and was known as the Rocking Chair Cinema because it had chairs that would rock. It was owned by Stewart & Everett Theaters from when it opened in the 60’s to around 1986 or 1987 when Carmike Cinemas bought the Rock Hill theaters. This theater closed February 28, 1987.
The Cinema and the Mini Cinema were two different theatres. The picture above is the Cinema and the address is the Cinema. The Mini Cinema was in a shopping center on Cherry Road.
Next time to Charlotte I might pull off I-77 and take a look.Thanks.
Back in those days GP and PG pictures were not for kids unlike the loose way the PG rating is slapped around today.
“VON RICHTHOFEN and BROWN” play here.Pretty good WWI flick.
August 10 1971 and “THE OMEGA MAN "opens with a warning,"MANAGEMENT DOES NOT RECOMMENED FOR CHILDREN”,I noticed a few Rock Hill Theatres would insert that in the ads.
