Lake Theatre

Clermont, then a small citrus town near Orlando, received its first movie theater in 1915, the Reliance Airdome. It was operated by the owner of the Reliance garage next door and had cinderblock walls and of course no roof. Movies were screened in the evenings.

A new theater, the Reliance Theatre, was built on the airdome’s site in 1922; it was fitted for sound in 1929.

By 1950, it had become the Lake Theatre until its closure in 1960. It appears that it was demolished almost immediately.

I believe the local newspaper now occupies the site of the Lake Theatre in Clermont.

You might be right. This is a picture of the block from sometime in the 40s. The Lake is just next door to the large building on the left side. I believe you can see how the awning rises up a little bit at the far edge. I can’t seem to make out any theater signage, though.

When I visited the Clermont Historical Association at least a year ago, the person in charge told me the theatre was at the site of the newspaper’s offices.
