Located at 1302 N. 3rd Street in Harrisburg across from the Broad Street Market, this former neighborhood theatre opened on July 29, 1921 as the Broad Street Theatre with Alla Nazimova in “Billions” & Buster Keaton in “The Scarecrow”. It operated as a grind house in later years and was closed on August 27, 1953 with Kirby Grant in “Northern Patrol” & Anne Baxter in “The Blue Gardenia”. It sat vacant until 1955 when it converted into retail use. It is now the home of the Midtown Scholar Bookstore & cafe.

The Broad Theatre was listed in the 1922 Harrisburg city directory.
I remember the Broad but my family never went there. The area around the Broad St. market was a nice shopping district when I was growing up. The Rialto was down the street. Also a store called simply Bill’s (as I recall). And a five-and-dime.
Opened on July 29th, 1921. Grand opening ad posted.
The Broad Theatre closed with a continuous run, grind policy on August 27, 1953 with “Northern Patrol” and “The Blue Gardenia.” It sat vacant until 1955, it was converted to a retail Greenberg Boston store that was forced from a previous location due to fire.
