The Sonora Plaza Cinema first opened as a twin in the mid-1970s by the West Side Valley Theatres chain and later expanded to five screens on March 29, 1985. Signature Theatres was its last operator who closed it in late-February 2001, likely due to Signature’s launch of the nearby 10-screener.

Been here as both a twin (seeing The Empire Strikes Back first-run here) as well as a 5-screener (seeing The Matrix and a few other films here). Rather bland theater and IMO the chop up job turning it into a 5-plex was rather poorly done.

They did have a Tuesday bargain night as well.

This theatre ended its life as Signature Theatres' Sonora Cinema 5. It was closed when Signature opened a new 10-plex nearby.

The address was 800 E Mono Way, Sonora, CA 95370
