The Emelka Palast was opened on 30th March 1928 with the silent film “Fair Game”. Seating in the auditorium was provided in orchestra and balcony levels. There was a huge dome in the centre of the ceiling which acted like a sky, and was back-lit around its rim. Along each side-wall were large murals depicting the imaginary city of Metropolis and skyscrapers of New York, painted by artist Hinrich Groth.
The Emelka Palast burned down in 1941, possibly due to allied bombing raids on the city of Hamburg. In 1952, a new Emelka Palast was built on the site, designed by architect Hans T. Holthey, and seating 875. This was closed in 1966.
The original facade and foyer of the first building were retained in the rebuild and are now in use as retail and a music studio.
