Drawing of The Empire Ciema Widnes

The New Empire Cinema was opened in May 1937. The auditorium was on a stadium plan, with a raised stepped sction at the rear. By the 1940’s it had been re-named Empire Cinema.

Taken over by Cheshire County Cinemas chain in the 1950’s, it was later twinned with seating in the former stalls screen for 508, and in the former circle screen for 165. It was closed in May 1983 and demolished by 1986. The Kingsway Leisure Centre was built on the site.

Interestingly, there is a new leisure center on the drawing board for Widnes which is to include a multiplex cinema. In the interim Cineworld in Runcorn is the closest theatre in the Halton district.

It had already been demolished by 1986 as I took photos of the other Widnes cinema buildings then, but found the site of the Empire empty. I haven’t seen any photos of it, so I was pleased to see this sketch in the foyer of the Woolton Picture House.
