Opened with “Captain Newman” and “The Wheeler dealers”.
This opened on April 25th, 1964. Its grand opening ad in the photo section.
Was the horse saved?
Hey Everyone – Brief, but still incomplete, update: the horse was taken down due to danger of falling. This information comes from Lawnside itself, but I have been unable to have someone get back to me that owns the site.
We need a FB page to get info….how is it possible no one knew why it was taken down? Create a kickstarter for funding if that’s what is needed to keeping them from scrapping it….rally the ozoners!!!
Front page lead story in the Courier-Post! The video in the online version includes an artist’s rendering of the drive-in, dated 1963.
@Minbinder … I have been searching for information since last night! I saw a video of it being taken down. The rear legs were not attached so I wonder if they came apart or they separated them first. I took some photos last night of it on the ground, but it was gone today. My blog has the photos (www.driveinadventures.wordpress.com).
Today they took down the white horse. I don’t know if they are restoring it or not. I can’t find any info & am stressing out :(
With the help of a flickr find and some advertisements, I was able to find out some information about the WHP drive-in. I posted the info on my drive-in blog (not much, but it’s something!). One big thing is that Sameric Owned/Operated this theater, as assumed.

What I’ve heard is the shopping center opened in the late 1960’s with Two Guys Department Store, Rickel Home Center, and Shop Rite Supermarket.
I drove past this shopping center many times, but never saw it as a drive-in.
There may have been a connection between this theater and the Black Horse Pike Drive-In a few miles away. Both theaters had towers topped by very similar large horse figures. There was a sign with an attraction board for this drive-in at the Collingswood traffic circle; after it closed, the board read “VISIT BLACK HORSE DRIVE IN” for a long time. (The sign was actually much closer to the Black Horse.) It’s possible that the Black Horse was opened as a replacement for this one, although the two sites are far enough apart that they could have drawn from different population bases to some extent.
This was a very mysterious and short-lived drive-in.
Here is a 1963 aerial photo of the location, courtesy of HistoricAerials.com.
You will notice the drive-in is not there in 1963, and by switching over to the 1970 aerial imagery, the location has already been developed into a shopping center.
Here is a 1965 aerial photo of the same location, courtesy of Earth Explorer and USGS, where you can now view the drive-in. It appears this drive-in opened sometime between 1963 and 1965, and was demolished sometime before 1970.
