The theatre closed in 1998. After some repurposing it was demolished in 2003 to provide more parking under a redevelopment plan which proved to be unsuccessful. The name and ownership of the mall changed a number of times. It’s virtually empty now and the town wants to have it demolished.
COBRA opened here on two screens, 12:30-1:30-2:30-3:30-4:30-5:30-6:30-7:30-8:30-9:30-10:30. Movies playing on more than one screen wasn’t a regular thing then.
Yeah I saw BASIC INSTINCT here and JENNIFER 8, REALITY BITES, and a late show of SEVEN on a November weeknight along with a family who had a child in a stroller. For SEVEN. At like a 10:30 show on a Thursday night.
Kelli Rippa, on her show, often mentions the Echelon Mall and attending movies there.
This opened on September 30th, 1970 and the large screen split on May 27th, 1977. Grand opening ads in the photo section.
I saw Return of the Jedi there when I was a kid and it was still a first run theatre.
Throughout the 90’s it became famous for its $1.95 tickets and $3.0 bottomless bucket of popcorn. Also famous for uncomfortable seats and sticky floors! By then it was a 4 screen theatre, but would often have more then 4 movies showing by staggering the times.
In the late 90’s it raised its evening prices to $2.95 to attempt to compete and stay open.
I remember Space Cowboys was one of the movies on the marquee (which was a sign they hung in the window) when the theatre closed, so it lasted until the year 2000. One of the last great cheapie theatres and the site for many of my high school dates in the 90’s.
Last movie I saw there was ‘54’ in 1998. Dollar cinema at the time. I remember it having a small, wood-paneled lobby, a couple of video games, and small red vinyl benches to sit on. The theaters were usual 70s style, with uncomfortable vinyl seats with metal backs, but, the experience was fine. I never remember an issue with sound or picture. Also saw Flirting with Disaster here as a dollar theater.
This was also where I saw ET on it’s premiere weekend. The lines were long, and we sat in the 4th row. I remember my godmother crying at the end, at it was the first time I really understood the power of the motion picture.
In the 90’s I believe it was run by a national chain of mostly dollar theaters called Reel Theatres.
I thought it was a 4- plex . Ive been to the theater one a long tome ago
