Jimmy Evans had a dream to build a drive-in theatre. He already had a name in mind, the Rocket Drive-In near Salisbury, North Carolina, but in the County of Rowan. Jimmy made the rounds talking to film bookers in Charlotte, N.C., but as he put it he was laughed out of the high rise. The concession stand was run by his wife, Candy. He wanted 35mm projectors, but when that did not come through he got two Twin Bell and Howell 16mm projectors, he had to build a wooden tower closer to the screen for presentation. His first movie was "Cannonball Run" and "W.W. and the Dixie Dance Kings" on June 22, 1997.

I was Wrong on the date,it was June 22 1997.Bob, the Article in the Charlotte Observer said the Drive-in was in Rowan County.N.C.Naturally,it seems on every theatre I put on, the subject never has a street address. The article did have two pictures,One with the owner standing in front of the screen and inside the snack bar.A little 16mm operation like this I bet did not last long, but it was a dream.

Geez,Chuck.Once again Owners renaming DRIVE-INS.I almost hate to submit them.In 1956 in my now famous 1956 Motion Picture Almanac i have three Drive-ins there: HITCHING POST,HI-WAY 601 Drive-in,and Salisbury Drive-in.Two that are different from what you have.
