Had the Dickinson chain still be in business, there would be large format screens called the GlenMAX.
Really, as the man who built the SouthGlen, I’d rather the original name SouthGlen 12. The reason the “Glen” got started is this; My grandfather built the Glenwood and it was a name that carried QUALITY. In an effort to carry on the tradition I suggested the use of GLEN in the theatre’s name with the idea there would be an East, West, etc. My name is Glen Wood Dickinson III. My dad was Jr. and grandfather Sr. Hence, “Glenwood.”
I worked at this theater from 1997-1999, through the transition from Dickinson to Goodrich. The theater was on the decline when the AMC Town Center 20 opened at 119th and Nall and the theaters had to split product. AMC managed to snag the blockbusters, leaving the theater slow on Friday and Saturday nights.
When Goodrich took over in 1999, they had a crazy idea to rebuild the lobby by tearing down one of the concession stands. That construction project was halted shortly thereafter when ticket sales continued to decline. Eventually, they finished the project by putting in a small counter (like you would find in your bathroom) with a sink.
Before I moved to the Dickinson Great Mall 16, Goodrich had dedicated one theater to showing classic movies. Unfortunately, no one showed up for those either. Those old films were horrible to build up!
Picture of the theater as a 24 Hour Fitness added.
This was one of the theatres that DIckinson divested themselves of when they went bankrupt in the early to middle 90’s. Goodrich changed the name from the Southglen to SouthQuality at that time.
Dickinson used the name ‘Glen’ after the founder Glen Dickinson Sr. Currently the remaining theatres in Kansas CIty are the NorthGlen, WestGlen 18 and EastGlen 16. If anyone has any information on how the KC Dickinson are doing it would be intereasting to hear as they are selling off theatres and not adding anything new for quite some time.
