The Chinook’s last show was on September 13, 1958 with “Enemy Below.” The theatre was torn down September 19, 1958 to make way for the Chinook Shopping Center which took its name from the ozoner.

Correction: This opened on May 12th, 1949 and closed in 1958. The Chinook theatre, as well as the Paramount / Scotiabank cinemas, were built on the site.

I think it’s named for the type of wind most common in that part of Canada, as Calgary was built on the prairies but is also close to the Rockies.
