The Theatre Rex is a luxurious theatre in Medan, Indonesia. According to the memory of my friends who live in Medan, the theatre probably opened to business in the 1950’s. The theatre renamed as Theatre Ria at an unknown date. Ria is bahasa Indonesia, literally meaning enjoy. The theatre is a purpose-built independent theatre building with auditorium with stalls, stage and balcony on the first floor, the lobby and entrance of the theatre also on the first floor with a ramp connecting with the thorougfare. The ground floor of the theatre building, as according to the memory of my friend, is an open space while the cinema is in business. The theatre probably closed in the 1990’s.
A restaurant opened in the stalls section and balcony section of the theatre after internal rebuild of the theatre building. The name of the restaurant, in bahasa Indonesia, is Restoran Ria. The ground floor of the theatre building has been converted as a garage.

The ground floor probably is a car park for the patrons of the restaurant,not as a garage as I written in the above introduction of the former Theatre Ria.

This bisoscoop Rex is one of many (about 20) bioscopen ( Rio. Radja etc)in Indonesia that my grandfather had. His name was Frederik Meijer. I used to go to this bisoscoop , free of course, all the time when I was about 6 years old. My mother was the director of this bioscoop. Outside would be many wagons selling coconut sweets. I was born in 1949 so at 1955 this bisoscoop was there already so it started quite a few years before your date of 1960. It was probably more like 1950.
