The Prospecta Theatre was opened in 1914. It was renamed Joyce Theatre in 1918, and closed in 1921. Although the building has been renovated, some elements from its theatre days still remain. Upstairs, the original ceiling above what was once the balcony was uncovered above a drop ceiling and has now been restored. There is also an old exit door outside, complete with some embossed art pattern which is peeling away. Interesting that this door leads to nowhere inside the building. The former lobby has been split into office space and a community outreach center.
The theatre auditorium has been split with a new ceiling cutting away the top half from the bottom. Pictures of the building’s renovation indicate that the basement floor (now a community center) sloped upwards from the front to the back at onew time, and must have been the orchestra section of seating.
