This was the first VIP location, which piloted Cineplex’s VIP offering. This location to my knowledge also introduced a few other things, such as:
The Cineplex Kids Club, where Cinema staff would keep an eye on your kids in a dedicated play area while you watch a movie, similar to what Ikea does. This is now a generic seating area, currently where the condiment stands are.
Xtras, a video store that offered DVDs, CDs, Books, Magazines, and other collectibles. This is now also a generic seating area, where the vending machines currently are.
A bowling alley, which also no longer exists. After it’s closure, the lower section of the bowling alley was turned into Xscape, and the upper section was closed off and turned into the current VIP Lounge. Previously, the VIP lounge was located upstairs where the VIP concession stand is, which still has three tables left from when it was a lounge (but no seating).
The Fast Lane, which allowed guests to order food via a kiosk to pick up later, skipping the lines. Cineplex got rid of this too and turned the Fast Lane section of concession into a YoYo’s, but most interestingly this concept was brought back when Cineplex updated their app, and guests can once again order food via the Cineplex App and pick it up from the old Fast Lane counter.
The SilverCity Hamilton Mountain location was planned to open around the same time as this location, but was delayed by about a year. It looks nearly identical to this location in terms of layout and design, even the janitor’s closet is in the same spot. However, it lacks VIP and instead has a “Coca-Cola Red Lounge” where the old VIP Lounge would have been. I have to wonder if that location was intended as a sister location to this one
This theatre opened with these movies with () denoting Digital Projection and (^) denoting VIP: The Golden Compass^, The Mist, Hitman, Enchanted, Beowulf*, No Country For Old Men, Fred Claus, August Rush^ and American Gangster^.
According to the Cineplex website, this is now known as Cineplex Cinemas Oakville & VIP
I uploaded the grand opening ad from December 7th, 2007.
