This venue’s 70mm presentations history is included in the recently-published article “70mm Presentations in Colorado Springs: A Chronology of 70mm Large Format Exhibition, 1965-Present”.
I loved this theater in the 1970’s. I think I saw my first ever movie in a theater here with KRAKATOA: EAST OF JAVA. The theater featured a curved 150 degree panorama wide screen, which was great for big event movies. The seating was steeply raked, stadium-style many years before that became popular. The theater hosted ROCKY HORROR on Saturday nights at midnight, which I finally got to attend on my 15th birthday. My best experience here was opening weekend of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. A perfect setting. Massive wraparound screen. I was captivated. Now that I live in Los Angeles, I marvel that I was able to grow up with a movie house very similar to the Cinerama Dome, in little ol’ Colorado Springs!
I worked at the UA Cinema 150, while I was in High School and CU (1980-1985) and saw plenty of films here. Must’ve done every job in the place except pojectionist, been up on the catwalk behind the screen and up on the roof to change light bulbs. Every Friday and Saturday night at midnight was The Rocky Horror Picture Show with guests playing out the parts down in front of the screen until someone fell and tore the screen. I moved aware in 1985 and had no idea it had turned into a live venue.
This has been a concert venue for as long as I’ve lived here in the Springs. I went to see Stabbing Westward here more than a decade ago. But, I believe my wife said that she saw Superman here when she was a kid.
