Cinema

Located in the Suffolk town of Beccles. The Cinema was opened in October 1914 and was operated by Eastern Counties Cinemas. It had single storey entrance hall/foyer behind which was the bulk of the auditorium which had a decorative facade. It had a 24 feet wide proscenium, the stage was 12 feet deep and there were two dressing rooms. By the end of the 1920’s it was operated by the Agar Circuit, based in Colchester. In 1929 it was equipped with a sound on disc sound system and the first sound film to be shown here was Maurice Chevalier in “The Love Parade”. By then it was operated by an independent operator. It was soon equipped with a British Acoustic(BA) sound system. By 1951 a Western Electric sound system had been installed. At that time, it was mainly screening ‘B’‘ films and Western films.

The Cinema was closed in early-February 1960 with Christopher Witty in “Life in Emergency Ward 10” & David Niven in “Ask Any Girl”.

The building became a warehouse & a John Wilson Furniture Showroom. The single storey entrance hall/foyer were removed, and the space became a paved forecourt. In 2003 it became an italian restaurent in the Prezzo chain. That closed in April 2003. The building became an art gallery.
