Regal Cinema

Located in Beccles, Suffolk. The Regal Cinema was opened on 26th October 1931 with Jeanette MacDonald in “Monte Carlo”. Designed by noted cinema architect Cecil Masey in a ‘Spanish-American’ style, seating was provided for 510 in the stalls, 159 in the circle and there were two boxes on either side wall which seated 10 persons. The proscenium was 36ft wide and the stage 15ft deep. There were four dressing rooms. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system, which was later changed to a British Acoustic(BA) sound system.

The Regal Cinema was equipped with CinemaScope in 1955. Part-time bingo was introduced in the early-1970’s. The Regal Cinema showed it last film “Kelly’s Heroes” on 20th November 1976. It became a full-time bingo club, but presented Sunday stage shows of “Old Time Music Hall from December 1976. These had ceased by 1980, and bingo reigned until closure in the 1980’s. The building was demolished and housing built on the site.
