The Galaxy Six in Tacoma, WA is/was basically the same design but with 6 screens rather than 12. This wasn’t a bad theatre at all and was surprised that it was demolished after a decade of relatively good business. It was best that this had to go rather than the Landmark’s River .
Loews Cineplex declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy on February 15, 2001. It would vanquish 56 theaters nationwide. Congratulations River Oaks Plaza 12 - you are one of those venues as Loews moved on following the March 1, 2001 showtimes. Three other area venues also shuttered in the reorganization. This one was demolished.
Please update, total seats 3500, article from Houston Chronicle quoated the total seats and it’s the photos section
What’s odd is that I still remember seeing the THX Tex bumper at this theatre during screenings of Antz and Star Trek: Insurrection. Of course, that was several years after the theatre opened, but even so….
The Cineplex Odeon River Oaks 12 opened on October 12th, 1990. Grand opening ad posted. No THX systems and only one 70MM projection system.
We still need more pictures of this theatre. Someone posted some of the Spectrum, so who knows what’s next.
More specifically, this theatre opened in October of 1990.
I also have reason to believe that I saw Batman Returns at this theater. In turn, Batman Returns was the first movie I ever saw in any theater.
I may have seen other movies at this theatre besides the ones I mentioned, but they escape me at this time.
@Disney_Fan: Alien Resurrection?
Here are some movies I saw at this theater: Richie Rich, Independence Day, Star Wars: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Antz, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Mighty Joe Young (1998). The latter was also the last movie I ever saw at this theater.
I remember seeing Pokemon: The First Movie at the Cineplex Odeon River Oaks about a year before it closed. I believe I also saw an Alien film here a few years before, but I don’t remember.
Now this was a great theater! Someone needs to post some pictures of this theater.
The map needs correction. The location was on the north side of WEST Gray between Dunlavy St. and Waugh Dr.
As it opened in 1990, the River Oaks Plaza 12 must have been designed in the office of architect David K. Mesbur, who was the exclusive designer for Cineplex Odeon from 1983 through 1990.
