Why build 14 more screens in Ontario when the Ontario Mills already had 53 screens, operated by Edwards and AMC? The construction of the Edwards Mountain Village Stadium, just over seven miles away from the Mills, was proposed to the city council in July of 1997 as a neighborhood rather than a regional attraction like the Mills. Edwards even wanted 22 screens but the Riverside Press-Enterprise says it was scaled back to 18 and finally to 14 screens because of the concerns of neighbors.
Designed by architectural firm Blair Ballard Architects, the Mountain Village Stadium opened on March 19, 1999. This gave the city of Ontario at the time a total of 77 screens, which included the Pacific Theatres 10 on Archibald Avenue, which hung on until October of 2002.
The $20 million entertainment center has been a part of Regal Entertainment Group since 2002. With a parking garage, shops and restaurants it’s convenient for locals who do not want to brave Ontario Mills. In 2012 Ontario has a more reasonable 67 screens.
