Located in the Gorton district in the east of the city. The Cosmo Cinema was opened in 1916. Seating was provided in stalls and circle levels. In 1930 alterations were carried out on the projection room to the plans of architect Robert John McBeath.
It was taken over by the Union Cinemas chain in July 1936, and they were taken over by the Associated British Cinemas(ABC chain in October 1937.
The Cosmo Cinema was closed on 30th July 1960 when it was damaged by a fire. The last films were Abbott & Costello in “Dance With Me Henry” and Peter Graves in “Fort Yuma”.
The building was converted into a bingo club. Later in retail use, over the years it became a bicycle shop and a fishing tackle shop. It then lay derelict for several years and was demolished in late-2008. A Tesco Extra supermarket has been built on an extended side.
