Opened prior to 1941 when it was listed with a 500-seat capacity. By 1950 it was operated by the Auditorium Co., a subsidiary of the Nashville, TN based Crescent Amusement Co. It was taken over by Martin Theatres in January 1961.

The Bedford Theatre was closed in 1980. It was named Bedford because Shelbyville is the county seat of Bedford County.

I think the Bedford closed long before 1980. We visited our family in Shelbyville (Funeral Home business) several times in the 50’s and 60’s and the only theatre was the Princess and the 41 drive in. My Grandfather did tell me about where it was located, but I don’t remember where.

Address is 111-113 West Depot Street. South side of the square. Building is still standing and lobby entrance was split into two retail spaces. Hitchcock Insurance is in the right hand space. Early `50s photo added courtesy David Melson‎. 2018 street view confirms location.
