Located in the west Sydney suburb of Annandale. Owned and operated by independent Edgar Rein who also operated the Olympia Theatre in Annandale and the Strand Theatre in nearby Leichhardt, it opened in 1925 as the Annandale Theatre in a handsome brick building.
A fire damaged the interior in 1927, and the rebuilt theatre opened in 1928 as the Annandale Royal Theatre. It did well as the only cinema operating in north Annandale. The Annandale Royal Theatre was closed in August 1960.
The property had been purchased by Shell Oil, and they demolished it to build a gas station.

Would love to make contact with John Gleeson. Iam the great grand daughter of Edgar Rein and chief family historian. Would love to chat.

Hi Irene and John,
On 13th April, I am guiding a walk entitled “1920s Annandale” of which the Royal Theatre in Annandale is the centre piece, which brought me to this site.
I have published some material on the Theatre and the Reins at http://ramin.com.au/annandale/story4-1-industry.shtml#royal
Perhaps also of relevance to the cinema treasures website is information about Raycophone http://ramin.com.au/annandale/story4-1-industry.shtml#raycophone
There are some more recent memories of the Royal and Olympia theatres at http://ramin.com.au/annandale/story6-1.shtml

I plan to write up the walk as a book – 1920s Annandale: A Short Walk. I would love to add more about the family or the theatre.
