Regal Cinema

Located in Holt, Norfolk. The Regal Cinema was opened on 8th March 1937 with Fred MacMurray in “Texas Rangers”. It was part of the Bostock Cinema Circuit. It had a 14 feet deep stage, which was used for occasional variety shows. The proscenium was 28 feet wide.

CinemaScope was fitted in 1955, and the Regal Cinema continued until it was sold by the Bostock Cinemas Circuit in 1966. It was taken over by an independent operator Colin Dashwood (brother of Roy Dashwood who a year earlier had purchased the Regal Cinema, Wymondham). The Regal Cinema, Holt continued with films for a while, but operated as a bingo club on some nights a week, with bingo taking over completely until the 1980’s.

Now demolished, a housing development known as Regal Court now stands on the site.

When I visited, in October 2000 (see my photograph), the building was in use as Virgo’s function rooms.
