Cineplex opened the Cineplex Principal Plaza on March 5, 1982. The nine tiny theatres in the complex had a total seating capacity of just 676. Cineplex Odeon took over management in 1984 following the merger of the Cineplex and Odeon chains, after which the theatre was renamed the Principal Plaza Cinemas.
The theatre closed in 1989 when Cineplex Odeon opened a much larger nine-screener at Eaton Centre (now the City Centre Cinemas) nearby. The former cinema space has since been converted to office space for Bell Canada.
