82nd Ave Cinemas taken over by Act III in 1991.
Even though the opening ad claimed to be the world’s first all-THX multiplex, the Presidio Lincoln 3 theater in Austin, Texas, which first opened on November 27, 1985 had THX sound in all three auditoriums. But after the theater expanded to six screens on May 19, 1989, the theater became no longer an all-THX multiplex as the new auditoriums lacked the THX certification.
Last showtimes found on May 8th, 2004.
I saw many films there when Cineplex Odeon ran it. The projection was always the best in town. The auditoriums were deeply ramped much like today’s stadium seating and there were never any heads in the way. This was one sweet house at the time.
Cineplex Odeon were the first to own this between 1987-1990. Act III owned it between 1995-1998, and Regal Cinemas were the final owners from 1998-2007. Uncertain of who owned it from 1990-1995.
One source also states they were “the first all-THX multiplex in the world”, and also had capabilities to show 70mm films.
