On April 25, 1965 the Los Angeles Times reported that Continental Theaters had started construction on the $350,000 Plaza Theatre in Newhall. According to the Independent Theatre Guide of the LA Times, the theater opened on August 10, 1965 with an unnamed premiere. Regular programming began the next day with James Stewart’s 67th picture, “Shenandoah".
During the next 27 years the theater slowly became rundown and finally ended up as a discount house. In 1987 the community of Newhall became part of the new city of Santa Clarita. In February of 1992 the Daily News of Los Angeles reported that after a $1 million gutting and renovation it was reopening as the Plaza 3 Cinemas. The owners were aware they would be up against the Mann 10 in Valencia and the future Edwards at the Town Center but said there was a need for more cinemas in the area.
By 1999 the theater had closed and in 2000 it was converted into the Plaza Banquet Hall.
