The Cartier Theatre opened on April 16, 1942 in downtown Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. During its years as the Cartier Theatre, it was a single-screen cinema which seated 700.
In 1974, Bessette & Blanchard acquired the theatre, split it into two smaller screens and reopened it in September that year as La Boite a Films. The larger of the two screens at the revamped theatre, Studio 35, seated 314 while the smaller theatre, Studio 16, seated 243. In later years, a third screen, Studio 36, was added as a micro-cinema seating 51, for total seating of 608.
La Boite a Films closed in 1997 and was renovated into a bar and nightclub, Showtime Beethoven.
