Located in Romsey, Hampshire, at the junction of Winchester Road and Southampton Road. The Plaza Cinema De Luxe was opened on 14th December 1931 with Norma Shearer and Robert Montgomery in “Strangers May Kiss”. It was built for Humby’s Cinemas Ltd. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system and had a 25 feet wide proscenium, behind which was a sizable stage.
It had a couple more operators before closing in October 1975 with Bobby Driscoll in “Song of the South” & Emile Genest in “The Incredible Journey”. It was converted into a bingo club, which closed around 1981.
In 1982, it was purchased by the Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, and re-opened with an ‘Old Time Music Hall’ show on 5th November 1982.

As a Cinema, the last film shown was in October 1975 and was Disney’s “Song of the South” coupled with “The Incredible Journey”. (More photos etc can be found in an album on my Facebook group “Romsey Revisited”)
