Malco Theatres opened the Appletree Cinema in Apple Tree Shopping Center, near the corner of Mt. Moriah Road and Hickory Hill Extended in 1991. It faced an internal parking lot and its back was to Hickory Hill. This was a very bare-bones, though well-appointed cinema opened first as a discount cinema, then from October 20, 2000 as a Spanish-speaking cinema and finally closed on November 2, 2000. Wal-Mart wanted to open a Neighborhood Market on the site, but on the other end of the parking lot. The site was sold and the theatre demolished. Its site now contains a gas station.

I liked and miss the old Apple Tree cinema. When it first opened, it was a weird combo of both 1st and 2nd run movies in the same building, but that didn’t last. The first movie I ever saw there was “Bugsy” in 1991. Later saw “Babe,” “The Birdcage,” “She’s All That,” “Dante’s Peak” and others.
The Apple Tree Cinema 12 opened on December 13th, 1991 as a discount except for one screen. Grand opening ad and top-down aerial posted. (Apple Tree not Appletree)
This reopened as Cinema Malco showing movies in Spanish on October 20th, 2000, and closed on November 2nd, 2000. Another ad posted.
